plan for question on Vertigo and one flew over the cuckoo's nest

Compare how far your chosen films reflect the auteur signature features of their filmmakers.

INTRO
-Talk about what being an auteur is, and how it was made.
- can talk about the features shown by both of the directors such as the common blonde and improvisation within films.

Paragraph 1
- Topic Sentence: Hitchcock uses features in his films such as the common blonde this is shown in Vertigo through midge and madeleine. This type of style has been done in many other of his films such as rear window and the Birds.
-Furthermore another common theme used by Hitchcock is obsession, this is shown in vertigo by the way Scottie obsesses with Madeline and how the character in Rear window is constantly 'stalking' his neighbours.

Paragraph 2
-These aspects in Hitchcock's films is what makes him stand out as an auteur. Other directors like Milos Foreman isn't as strong of an auteur as Hitchcock who is believed by many to be the most iconic director ever.
- During the time that Alfred Hitchcock was making Vertigo he would have vary few people in his way whilst creating the film this was because everyone knew that every movie he made would instantly be a success so Hollywood studios like paramount where happy to let
him do what he wanted, this was something that a lot of directors didn't have the option to do during the time and whereat often given a lot of free rein when creating a film.

Paragraph 3
- Foreman is vary different to Hitchcock as an auteur as he allows his actors a lot of freedom allowing them to improvise a lot of scenes and would often roll the cameras when they whereat doing a scene because the actors would often stay in character throughout the day.
- Foreman isn't someone who heavily reflects his signature features in his films during the time, one reason for this is that this was his first film in the USA and so didn't have many films being him, also the amount of freedom he gave to his actors made it difficult to tell when its his singnature and not just the way the actor embodies the role, an example of someone like this in one flew over the cuckoo's nest is Jack Nicolson.

Paragraph 4
- When interpreting an auteur it doesn't always have to be the director, granted the auteur will often be the director it isn't exclusive and can include members such as the actor or the person doing the score. Jack Nicolson bring a specific style to his films with an often manic representation of his character with a need to overdramatise the situation.

Paragraph 5
- Both of the films represent women as someone with power, in Hitchcock's case the (usually blonde) women will use her way to manipulate the man through sexual manipulation, and acting as an often hidden power behind the scenes of a film.
- Milos Foreman does this in a completely different way, he presents women power in OFOCN through nurse Ratchet, this character believes that she is doing a good thing and is a necessary evil, this kind of power is presented a lot more obviously in the film, for example in the first few group sessions we see some of the characters start to cower when she speaks to them with Billie's stutter coming on harder when talking to her showing clear fear of her authority.

Conclusion

To conclude Hitchcock is more of an auteur than Foreman due to his steady stream of films behind him and him not giving any freedom to his actors, in fact there was a part in Vertigo where Hitchcock would tell midge exactly when to look up down left and right. This isn't the case for Foreman as he gives his actors a lot of freedom reducing his impact on the film as a director, however he is still an auteur as he uses his own techniques within the film. In continuation Hitchcock did have other people in his production company that worked with him on many films such as the person doing the scores, something vary famous within Vertigo, this shows that nobody can ever be the only one making a film.
