Pulp fiction is an experimental film and challenges conventional approaches in its narrative.
One of the key differences with Quentin Tarantino’s films is that they are often not in chronological order therefore not using the conventional 3 point structure heavily used by directors such as Alfred Hitchcock containing a beginning, middle, and end in that order. Pulp fiction is one of these films not made chronologically, in an interview Tarantino stated that he liked to remove 20% of his story allowing his audience to make the story their own, and by making the film in this way he is able to cut back and forth with the narrative allowing the viewer to create their ideas of what happens in-between.
Furthermore, Pulp Fiction also uses a circular narrative (when the film finishes where it started) a technique believed to be very experimental and rarely used in previous Hollywood films. When the first scene starts to play you can hear a diegetic motorbike engine in the background this is the same noise used in the very last scene of the film if it where to be in chronological order (when butch is riding away with zed’s motorbike), this idea of everything finishing as it started comes back to the unconventional prospects of the film where the audience can feel like nothing has changed and that the character’s arcs haven’t amounted to anything, this contrasts to ‘fairy-tale’ films like Cinderella where there is a happily ever after at the end of the film.
Additionally, another way the films creates a circular narrative is by having the same scene at the beginning and the end the difference with the two scenes is that we follow from the robbers point of view and the lead up to the robbery in the café, and at the end we see Vincent and Jules lead the narrative and we see the entire robbery unravel where different characters narrative intertwine. Again the use of a circular narrative is a relatively unconventional approach to film making at the time, but this was one of the contributing factors that made the film such a success.
In continuation, Tarantino uses three main narratives within the film they are butch Vincent and Jules these different stories are all linked to Marcels Wallis in one way or another, this abnormal way of filming is used often by the director in other films such as inglorious bastards where you are shown more than one narrative that links together at the end. Tarantino uses this technique in Pulp Fiction as it is very engaging for the viewers as there is often more than one thing going on in a scene, the problem with having three separate narratives is that it is difficult to do well and takes a lot of time on screen to build their character's arc.
To conclude, Pulp Fiction is a unique film that brings together a lot of aspects from other films and refines them in a Tarantino way and by doing this he makes his films challenge conventional approaches, he also does this by showing an intense amount of blood, swearing, and drugs , in fact Pulp Fiction had the word F#ck in it just over 250 times with the first film to have less than 100 of the word being kill bill being his 5th film. This shows that as a director he uses an unconventional amount of intense themes that are interesting to the viewers being the prominent reason that his films do so well
