P.L. what extent is pans labyrinth a political film

To what extent is pans labyrinth a political film? does the film have a political message and if so, what is it?

notes:
-"a new clean Spain" clean representing ethnic cleansing/ whipping out all of the communists.
- libertarian lims in its over messages.

-"to obey- just like that - for obedience's sake... without questioning... thats something only people like you do."
-Del Toros negative views on Fascism are expressed through the film
- one interpretation of Ofelia fairy tales are her escape from the horror of the world she is forced to go though.
-"I hate structure. i'm completely anti-structural in terms of believing in institutions. i hate them. i hate any religious or economic or social holding."-Del Toro.
- the toad is destroying the tree like fascism is sucking the lifeboat of Spain.
- following the conclusion of the civil war there was continuing conflict between Franco's forces and guerrilla forces who fought against the dictatorship.
- Pans labyrinth's setting northern Spain is significant as not only was it Franco's birthplace, it was here that the first Spanish guerrilla movement was established in 1942.
- during the banquet scene the pope talks about how the people will do fine with the rations they are given as he gives himself another helping of food, showing that he will not suffer with the people and supports the fascism ideology as it helps him, and not the religion.
- fascism is shown to be a brutal belief enforced through Vidal who asks questions later, this juxtaposes the communist shown in the movie who are shown to be kind and friendly to people who aren't communist or fascist.
