-powerful and brave as shown in the opening rooftop chase scene.
-doesn't want to stay put for long and wants to go outside and do things with his life.
-"bright young lawyer" quit it to become a police officer, shows that he doesn't want the easy life and wants more excitement in it.
-dresses in normal clothes for the film so that it connects with the everyman of the time so that men can feel like they understand him.
-would rather quit than sit behind a desk. if he can't do what he wants to do he will leave.
-very stubborn, whenever he gets a decision in his head nobody is able to change his mind.
-"i am a man of independent means",he does what he wants.
- "where do you expect me to start, the golden gate bridge"being childish. Also ironic/foreshadowing when he does jump into the river from the golden gate bridge.
- Scottie becomes agitated in the gentlemen club with Gavin as he is confused and he doesn't like the feeling of not knowing. Additionally in this scene he sits forward in his chair whereas as Gavin relaxes in his chair not showing much expression.

-sophisticated and motherly, she is always shown to have scottie on her mind and clearly cares about his well being.
-bookish, well read, anything has been written. uses things from books that back up her statements. Able to read between the lines
-"now midge don't be so motherly"
-"thats skid row isn't it" general knowledge is very good from her books
-she asks the doctor about Scotties vertigo because he isn't willing to accept his problems and even believes he is able to get rid of it.

-seduces men and is very aware of her beauty and tries to manipulate scotty.
-stands out and doesn't fit in anywhere represented through her grey suit.
-she is the Hitchcock blonde
-mysterious. Ghostlike shown in her green dress when it appears to make her look elevated and light.

Gavin Elster

-"i find it dull", not interested in the way his life is going
-"someone has to look after her interests"
-"colour, excitement, freedom, power" stereotypical baddie.
-"a special favour to me, i want you to follow my wife", believe people will be willing to do thing for him, this could be due to his time in the army and his belief that the world owes him something
-"take possession of a living being",shown to be superstitious at the beginning
-"then you are of know you to me",making Scottie feel guilty
-"you are still the hot headed scottie from college",insulting Scottie in an attempt to make him listen to him
-All signs show that he is manipulative from the way he speaks in his dominant attitude towards Scottie"is it a permanent physical disability" showing how he think Scottie is weaker and possibly trying to get Scottie to feel guilty.
- Affluent and powerful, married into a position of wealth and know all her family have died(perhaps there deaths were sped up by Gavin).
-whenever you see him he is always in a very expensive place.
-everything he does is calculated and precise and he has already though of what he is going to do and what its affect will be before he does it.
